Our Story
Dunsmuir Elementary School District is one of Siskiyou County's best kept secrets. The district is made up of one K-8 school and a state preschool. Our entire staff works together as a family to support our students and each other. We take pride in the fact that we are a Community School.
Dunsmuir Elementary School is set amongst the trees on a hillside. We have a full-size gym and three separate playgrounds for preschool, primary and upper grades. Our school has state of the art technology (iPads, laptops, Smartboards) in the classrooms making us a 1-1 school. We also teach robotics and coding. We serve a free breakfast and lunch to all of our students.
Our preschool through Fifth Grade classrooms each have a full-time paraprofessional. Our upper grade classrooms share a paraprofessional.
DES has a watershed program which allows our students to become familiar with their surrounding environment through local field trips as well as overnight trips to other areas in California.
We also have an outstanding extended learning program (Siskiyou Afterschool for Everyone). Students have access to a variety of enrichment activities including gardening, art, robotics and coding, as well as two 3-D printers in our fabulous MakerSpace.
Dunsmuir Elementary School is a MTSS (Multi-Tier System of Support) school. MTSS is an integrated, comprehensive framework that focuses on CCSS, core instruction, differentiated learning, student-centered learning, individualized student needs, and the alignment of systems necessary for all students’ academic, behavioral, and social success. We have a counselor on campus 5 days a week. Students also have access to a staffed sensory room on site.
